Apr. 29, 2008 - Region-4 Quarterfinal - American vs Hialeah
Of all the ways the T-Breds season could have ended, this was perhaps
the cruelest possible. Hialeah’s 2008 baseball campaign came to an
close
at Alex Fernandez Field with a regional quarterfinal 6-3 loss to the
American Patriots. Senior Robert Buitrago (6-3) took the loss. Hialeah finishes with a record of 19-8.
The five inning rain shortened game was marked by a confusing, to say
the least, ending. Before the start of the sixth inning both teams were
ordered off the field due to a lightning alert just as rain started to
fall. After a 45 minute delay, it was decided that even though the
lighting had gone, the rain had stopped and the field was playable, the
remainder of the game would be played the next day. Or so the T-Breds
were led to believe. Upon arriving at school the next morning, the
players, dressed in their uniform tops, learned that despite what they
had been told the night before, since five innings had been played it
was an official game. No two innings remaining. No six outs left. Game
over. For seven seniors, Dariel Castro, Joel Berlanga, Robert Buitrago, Duniesky
Dominguez, Nelson Falcon, Jonathan Regalado, and Randy Verdecia, career
over.
Started by a double on the second pitch of the game, American was able
to score first and take an early 1-0 lead. Hialeah limited the damage
to
one run with an Alejandro Diaz to Joel Berlanga to Randy Verdecia
double
play. After two quick outs in the bottom of the inning, the T-Breds
mounted a rally. Aided by the Patriot pitcher suddenly unable to find
the plate, four successive base on balls were awarded to Randy
Verdecia,
Dayron Gomez, Luis Dequsada and Alejandro Diaz. They were followed with
a line drive shot back up the middle by Jonathan Regalado which the
American pitcher was luckily able to deflect but not control, Hialeah
took a 3-1 lead.
A nightmare fourth inning proved to be the T-Bred’s undoing. After a
ground out to third baseman Kevin Canizares, The T-Breds were not able
to get another Patriot out until American had scored four runs. The
second out was in itself a heads up play as second baseman Alejandro
Diaz fired a rocket throw from foul territory in right field to catcher
Luis Dequesada that gunned down a runner at the plate after an error.
Four hits (one double), two bases on balls, one hit batter and two
errors in the inning flipped the score 6-3 in the Patriot’s favor. An
outstanding diving play by the American shortstop that was converted
into a double play snuffed out a Hialeah threat in the bottom of the
inning. The Patriots would turn another twin killing in the bottom of
the fifth. Then came the rain and lighting delay. True, American had outplayed
Hialeah up to that point. True, the breaks were going the Patriots way.
However, baseball is not a game governed by a clock. Outs must be
recorded irrespective of the time it takes. The most implausible of
probabilities are not only always possible, they frequently occur.
Stranger things have happened and in baseball, they often do. To the
T-Bred players, the seniors in particular, the end of the 2008 season
will not be remembered in terms of a defeat to American. Rather, what
will always come to mind whenever this game is thought of will be six
outs worth of \\\\\\\"what if?\\\\\\\"
Apr. 21, 2008 - District-14 Championship - Miami High vs Hialeah
Immediately after winning their district championship 4-1 against Miami High, the T-Breds literally found themselves with a problem on their hands. As the team was congratulating themselves on the infield of Alex Fernandez Field and taking photographs with the hard won trophy, it was discovered that Hialeah had mistakenly been given the runner up award. Third baseman Kevin Canizares ran over to the departing Miami team, diplomatically explained the situation and traded for the correct hardware. Then with the proper award, gold colored instead of silver secured, all the Hialeah faithful shared in the victory. For a moment, the problems of humanity were forgotten by the T-Bred family of players, fans and coaches. Even if just for an instant, all was right with the world. Miami High drew first blood in the contest as the Stingaree lead off batter singled on a chopper that bounced over the head of Hialeah second baseman Alejandro Diaz. He would score with two outs in the inning on an infield hit. Hialeah equaled the score in the bottom of the first with some clutch two out hitting. First baseman Randy Verdecia singled through the right side and stole second. Pitcher Dayron Gomez hitting for himself, helped his own cause with a Texas league bloop just over the head and out of the reach of the Miami shortstop in shallow left center field, scoring Verdecia.Hialeah would take the lead in the bottom of the third. Ralph Ruiz who has found a home in right field and who’s bat has been hot as of late, singled through the left side leading off the inning. Then, again with two outs, Randy Verdecia drove him in with a hit through the right side. Randy would finish the night two for three with a run scored, RBI and two stolen bases. The T-Breds finished off the night’s scoring with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth thanks in large part to Stingaree generosity. Alejandro Diaz singled to left field with one out on an 0-2 pitch. Alejandro finished with a two for three game. Four bases on balls in the inning (one intentional) would walk in Diaz and Kevin Canizares. The four runs on eight hits was enough help for Hialeah pitching who had to work around four errors committed by the T-Breds. Starting pitcher, junior Dayron Gomez (6-3) worked five innings scattering three singles and striking out seven for the win. He was relieved in the sixth inning by senior Nelson Falcon. Nelson who has a somewhat unorthodox side winding motion, used his submarine delivery with the efficiency of a U-boat commander firing torpedoes. He induced a double play ground ball on his second pitch and then struck out the next batter on three pitches. Five pitches, three outs. Sixth inning over. Falcon worked two innings of both hitless and scoreless relief, striking out three to earn his first save of the year. The last out came on a ground ball to third baseman Kevin Canizares. Kevin had plenty of time to throw over to Verdecia at first base as the Stingeree batter stumbled out of the batters box. Kevin would have ample opportunity to demonstrate his speed and agility a few minutes later when he retrieved the championship trophy. As district champions, the T-Breds now 19-7 on the year, will host American High in a regional quarterfinal match up next Tuesday at Alex Fernandez Field.
**A very special thanks to all the students and faculty that came out and showed support. From the coaches and players we say THANK YOU!!!! Make sure you come out Tuesday night as your T-Breds will battle the American High Patriots in the Regional Quarterfinal. The game will be at held at A.F.F at 7:00PM. Make sure you wear BLUE!!!!

Apr. 21, 2008 - District-14 Semifinal - Miami Springs vs Hialeah
With Miami Springs threatening in the seventh inning, four runs already in and the bases loaded, a red moon rose over the right field line fence at Alex Fernandez Field. An omen boding ill for someone. Just then a fly ball came to rest in the tender grasp of T-Bred right fielder Ralph Ruiz ending the game. Hialeah won the district elimination playoff game 10-5 living to play another day. The T-Breds raised their season record to 18-7 and will now play Miami High in the district championship. Hialeah seemed nervous at the start of the game. Two successive errors, a muffed throw by first baseman Randy Verdecia and a fielding miscue by shortstop Joel Berlanga, after the first out had been recorded in the first inning led to a Golden Hawk unearned run. Losing 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the T-Breds finally got to work. With one out in the inning, second baseman Alejandro Diaz ran he count full before being awarded a base on balls. Alejandro then promptly stole second. From there the next batter, left fielder Jonathan Regalado also ran the count full before delivering a hit through the left side driving Diaz in to tie the score. Jonathan then ran true to his thoroughbred namesake as the ball got away from the Miami Springs left fielder. Regalado stretched out the single and slid into third on the two base error. Third baseman Kevin Canizares then hit a first pitch deep fly ball to center sacrificing Regalado home. Now ahead 2-1, the T-Breds would never lose the lead. Although the Golden Hawks had their opportunities with runners on in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, crafty pitching and solid defense at that point by the T-Breds kept Miami Springs off the scoreboard. Senior Hialeah starting pitcher Robert Buitrago (6-2)worked six and one third innings for the win. Robert surrendered six hits while striking out an equal number, six. Hialeah broke the too close for comfort 2-1 game open in the fifth inning sending eight batters to the plate and scoring three runs. Center fielder Erick Yglesias started the T-Bred rally being hit by pitch. A single through the right side by Randy Verdecia put runners on the corners. One wild pitch later, Hialeah had runners at second and third. Designated hitter Dayron Gomez cleared the bases with a full count triple to right center scoring both runners. That would drive the Golden Hawk starting pitcher from the game. Gomez would eventually be driven in by a Kevin Canizares single through the left side making the score 5-1 in the T-Breds favor after five. Not finished scoring yet, Hialeah feasted on Miami Springs relief pitching in the sixth. The T-Breds sent nine batters to the plate scoring five runs. With two on and one out, Dayron Gomez drove in a run and reached first on a fielding error by the Golden Hawk second baseman. That would open the floodgates. Alejandro Diaz hit a fly to center sacrificing in another run. The next batter, Jonathan Regalado with the outfield shifted to left, hit a very lonely ball to right field. The triple scored two. Jonathan finished the night two for three with three RBIs. He would be driven home by a double courtesy of Kevin Canizares.Kevin had a productive two for two game driving in three. With the score now 10-1 in the top of the seventh, Miami Springs would not go gentle into that good night. The Golden Hawks mounted a rally that started with some T-Bred help. An inning opening fielding error and a hit batsman put two on. Then after a strikeout, two successive singles would make it a night for pitcher Robert Buitrago. He gave way to senior reliever Nelson Falcon who had trouble finding the strike zone. Nelson walked three but did manage a strike out before the fly ball to Ruiz ended the game. Ruiz, normally a catcher, had an outstanding game in right field with four put outs. Ralph almost had a fifth on a diving attempt. In the end it seemed, the moon was T-Bred red instead of Golden Hawk garnet.
**A very special thanks to all the students and faculty that came out and showed support. From the coaches and players we say THANK YOU!!!! Make sure you come out Thursday night as your T-Breds will battle the Miami High Stingarees in the District-14 Championship game. the game will be at held at A.F.F at 7:00PM. Apr. 15, 2008 -G.M.A.C Tournament Semifinal - South Miami vs Hialeah
First, the bad news. Hialeah lost its Greater Miami Athletic Conference(GMAC) baseball tournament semifinal match up against South Miami 7-5. The game, played under cool and windy conditions at Alex Fernandez Field, was the second home loss suffered by the T-Breds this year. Starting pitcher senior Robert Buitrago (5-2) surrendered six runs but only two of them earned in his four innings of work. Sloppy play by the defense behind him in the early innings caused three T-Bred errors all directly leading to four unearned runs. Now the not so bad news. If this year’s diamond edition of the T-Breds have learned anything, it’s to never give up. Losing from the second inning onward, Hialeah mounted a surging seventh inning rally which almost saw the T-Breds pull off their second late game comeback in as many nights. Down 7-2 in the last frame, Hialeah struck for three runs on four hits and left the bases loaded, the tying and winning runs on base, when the game ended. Finally, the good news. Senior leadership by three players exemplified the team’s never say die attitude. First baseman Randy Verdecia had an outstanding game going 3-4 with three RBIs. Shortstop Joel Berlanga finished the night 2-4 with a double, base on balls and a run scored. Pitcher Duniesky Dominguez took the hill for the seventh inning and retired the side in order on ten pitches. Duniesky struck out the last two batters, both looking. The two GMAC tournament games played this week against Krop and South Miami have served as invaluable practice in order to prepare for next week’s district tournament. Hialeah will face Miami Springs at Alex Fernandez Field Monday night in a loser go home, season over district playoff game.
Apr. 14, 2008 -G.M.A.C Tournament Quarterfinals - Krop vs Hialeah
Can there be such a thing as a jinx? In the ever superstitious world of baseball nothing is ever taken for granted. Hialeah’s 6-3 dramatic come from behind victory over Krop in the quarterfinals of the Greater Miami Athletic Conference (GMAC) Tournament had its fair share of jinx and curses overtones. So when the T-Breds traveled to Flamingo Park, a field where they have never been particularly lucky, to play in the GMAC Tournament, a competition where they have never been overly successful, the over cautious Hialeah fan might have brought a lucky talisman or two just to be on the safe side. Playing at the Miami Beach field as home team, Hialeah came up to bat in the fourth inning having managed only one hit as opposed to seven for Krop, in a scoreless tie. Leading the inning off, junior center fielder Erick Yglesias, laid down a text book bunt to first for a base hit. It then took only a pitch in the dirt and Yglesias was off to the Camp Town races. An errant throw by the Lightning catcher and and the center fielder then mishandling the ball scored Yglesias without the T-Breds having to put the ball in play. Hialeah had drawn first blood on a wild pitch and a double error. The lead would be short lived though. The Krop fifth inning started with two successive hits, an infield single by the ninth batter and a double to right by the lead off, chased Hialeah starting pitcher Juan Sensat from the hill. Juan pitched four innings giving up nine hits, striking out one. He was relieved by Nelson Falcon. Trouble started almost immediately for Falcon as an ill advised throw home on a fielder’s choice with no chance to get the run from scoring put two on with no outs and the score now tied. Then what looked to be a good defensive play to get an out at third turned into disaster as T-Bred third baseman Alejandro Diaz threw to first trying for a double play. The throw sailed wild and the error was responsible for two more runs. Hialeah failed to score in the bottom of the inning and after five, late in the game, Krop was leading3-1. The T-Breds only able to gather three hits up to that point. Could there really be a Flamingo Park jinx? If there was, the jinx was about to end. T-Bred designated hitter, Dayron Gomez lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. Quickly finding himself in an 0-2 hole, Dayron was able to manage a single through the right side. Then with one swing of the bat, catcher Luis Dequsada tied the game. Luis smashed a 1-0 pitch into the wind and over the right field fence for his second home run of the year. Alejandro Diaz and Jonathan Regalado then had back to back infield singles followed by a base on balls to Luis Diaz loading the bases. Pinch hitter Kevin Canizares drew another base on balls forcing what turned out to be the winning run home. Ironically, Alejandro Diaz who had committed the error allowing Krop to take the lead, scored the go ahead run. Two more runs would come home in the inning. Hialeah sent ten batters to the plate and scored five runs (four earned). No rabbit’s foot charm was needed. Only some timely hitting. Winning pitcher Nelson Falcon pitched three innings in relief for the victory. He struck out three including the last out of the game. His record now stands at 2-0. Hialeah’s record rises to 17-6.
Apr. 11, 2008 - Ronald Reagan vs Hialeah
Starting a new tradition, Ronald Reagan High School’s baseball team traveled from their Doral area campus to Alex Fernandez Field for the first ever Bisons - T-Breds match in the last regular season game for both teams. Experience proved too much as Hialeah won the inaugural contest 11-1 in five innings. At the start of the game Hialeah was too congenial a host as the Bison lead off hitter reached on an error and then scored on another. The 1-0 lead was as gracious as the T-Breds were willing to be though. In the bottom of the first, Hialeah lead off hitter Joel Berlanga was awarded a base on balls. He would be at third with one out when Hialeah’s big bopper, Randy Verdecia came to the plate. Swinging at a 2-1 pitch Verdecia’s bat, as it met the ball, said: HELLO BABY! The resulting two run smash sailed over the right field fence for Verdecia’s team leading fourth home run. Alejandro Diaz would later drive in another run with a single through the left side to make the score 3-1 after one. The situation was never in doubt afterwards. Hialeah added another run in the second as Luis Diaz doubled to center leading off the inning and was driven in by Pastor Sanchez. Five more runs were added in the third inning thanks in large part to a Bison error which made three of the runs unearned. Designated hitter, Dayron Gomez tripled to center in the fourth inning and was driven in by Luis Dequesada to add the T-Bred tenth run in the fourth. One more run in the fifth would end the game early due to the 10 run mercy rule.Starting pitcher Robert Buitrago (5-1), worked three innings for the victory striking out two while allowing only two hits. Edgar Varas and Duniesky Dominguez both pitched a scoreless inning of relief apiece. Varas struck out one while Dominguez rung up two. Joel Berlanga ended the night with two stolen bases bring his team leading total to nine this year. Dayron Gomez had a 2-2 night at the plater to raise his team leading batting average to an impressive .579. Alejandro Diaz who finished 2-1 on the night has seen his batting average rise to .405 so far this season. Hialeah finishes the regular season 16-6 overall and 11-1 in district play.
Apr. 7, 2008 - Monday Night Baseball at F.I.U - Killian vs Hialeah
There were heavily overcast skies above the Hialeah campus as the
T-Breds boarded for the bus ride to Florida International University.
Threatening storm clouds cast a pallor over the possibility of playing
the much anticipated Monday night game against the Killian Cougars. Blue
skies welcomed Hialeah upon arrival at University Park however. A rainbow behind the right center field fence greeted the players as they entered the stadium. Congressman Lincoln Diaz Ballart threw the ceremonial first pitch adding to the festive atmosphere of the evening. It would be a good night for baseball after all. The festive mood quickly turned to gloom for the Hialeah faithful there assembled though.
A big six run second inning by the Cougars all but doomed the T-Bred’s chances almost from the start. Killian would add another five runs on their way to an 11-5 non district victory over Hialeah. After a scoreless three up, three down first inning for both teams, Killian struck for the aforementioned six runs on four hits in the second. All six runs were scored before the T-Breds could manage an out in the frame. The big blow was a grand slam home run by the Cougar ninth batter. Hialeah would come back and score three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame to make the score 6-3 after two. The T-Breds found themselves playing catch up the entire night however and could not silence the Killian bats. The Cougars collected 11 hits on the night and were aided by four Hialeah errors. The T-Bred pitcher of record, junior Dayron Gomez was chased from the hill after three and a third innings. He surrendered nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits including two home runs and a double. Dayron struck out four while walking two. His record falls to 5-3.Hialeah did have some bright spots in the loss. Senior pitcher Nelson Falcon was impressive in relief. He struck out three in one and two thirds innings of work. Offensively, the T-Breds managed nine hits in defeat. Under other circumstances, not a bad night’s work. Of note were Alejandro Diaz who went 1-1 with a hit by pitch. Alejandro now leads the team with a .400 batting average. Luis Dequesada finished the night 2-3 including a wicked line drive off the Killian pitcher’s leg. Pinch hitting in the seventh inning, Alvino Burrola collected his first of what are hoped are many more to come varsity hits. There were a few anxious moments in the bottom of the second inning. Dayron Gomez leading off the inning hit a bloop fly ball into no man’s land. The Killian shortstop and center fielder collided chasing the Texas League hit. After laying motionless for several minutes, the Cougar center fielder was able to leave the game under his own power. Coupled with a forfeit by Northwestern, Hialeah’s record now stands at 15-6 and a final district record of 11-1.
Apr. 3, 2008 - Nova Spring Break Classic - Hialeah vs Sebastian River
Starting right where they had left off, the T-Breds made it three wins in a row at the Nova Spring Break Classic Tournament. Hialeah, playing as visitors against the Sebastian River Sharks at Colonels Field on the campus of Plantation Senior High School, jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. The T-Breds scored seven runs on seven hits in the first two innings in route to an 8-3 victory. In all, Hialeah collected 11 hits during the contest. Leading the way was junior Alejandro Diaz who went 3-3 on the day with a double and an RBI. Alejandro also had a very active glove at third base as he registered five assists and one putout on defense. Freshman catcher Luis Dequesada had a quiet 2-3 day on offense while anchoring a solid T-Bred defense that as of late has been stingy in giving up earned runs. While senior first baseman Randy Verdecia only had one hit to show for his three at bats, the one hit was a bases loaded double to left center in the second inning that cleared the bases. Randy would finish with four RBIs. Junior center fielder Erick Yglesias ran wild on the base path as he stole four bases during the afternoon game. Senior shortstop Joel Berlanga and freshman Randy Santiesteban who courtesy ran for Dequesada, both had one stolen bag apiece also. Winning pitcher, senior Nelson Falcon (1-0), would work a very effective five innings scattering four hits while striking out two. Junior Edgar Varas would take over the pitching duties for the last two innings in relief. Edgar surrendered two hits and struck out one.The win against the Vero Beach area team gave the T-Breds a 3-1 record during the spring break tournament. Overall, Hialeah now stands at 14-5.
Apr. 1, 2008 - Nova Spring Break Classic - Hialeah vs South Plantation
Yes, the T-Breds played on April 1. No, the score of the game is not an April fool’s joke. Playing in their third game of the Nova Spring Break Classic Tournament, Hialeah traveled to Paladin Park on the campus of South Plantation Senior High School where T-Bred bats wrecked havoc on the home standing Paladins. Hialeah’s offense erupted in two big innings, the third and sixth, scoring eight and five runs respectively en route to a 15-3 six inning victory. Hialeah took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning. Alvino Burrola running for catcher and fellow freshman Luis Dequsada, who had reached base via a walk, stole second. From there he was driven in by a single up the middle off the bat of junior Alejandro Diaz. Alejandro went 2-3 with a double for the day. In the third inning the T-Breds sent 12 batters to the plate to break the game open. The big blows coming in the form of a two run double down the left field line by sophomore Pastor Sanchez and a three run homer to left center by senior Joel Berlanga. Joel who finished the game going 2-4 added a double to the round tripper and drove in five. In the zone with a torrid groove, Berlanga has two home runs (the first two of his high school career) in his last two games.Leading 10-3, the T-Breds put the game away in the sixth. Senior center fielder Erick Yglasias put the finishing touch on a 13 hit performance by Hialeah with a two run single to left center. Senior pitcher Robert Buitrago pitched four innings, striking out 3 in raising his record to 4-1. Senior Duniesky Dominguez pitched the last two innings in relief, striking out one. Hialeah is now 2-1 in the spring break tournament and 13-5 overall.
Mar. 31, 2008 - Nova Spring Break Classic - Hialeah vs Hollywood Hills
Keeping true to their namesake, the T-Breds bolted to a fast start out of the gate, got out in front to an early lead and then coasted into winner’s lane. The 5-3 victory against Hollywood Hills was Hialeah’s second game of the Nova Spring Break Classic Tournament. After an hour and thirteen minute delay in the start of the game because of rain, the game began at 2:13 pm. Although the skies cleared up over Pat McQuaid Field in Davie, lightning came off the bat of Hialeah lead off batter Joel Berlanga. Joel took the second pitch of the game and drove it over the left center field fence for his first home run of the season. Later in the inning with one out, successive singles by first baseman Randy Verdecia and designated hitter Dayron Gomez along with left fielder Jonathan Regalado being hit by pitch, loaded the bases. Catcher Ralph Ruiz drove in the second run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to left scoring Verdecia. A ground ball to third by right fielder Alejandro Diaz seemed to be enough to finish the inning but agile Regalado was able to avoid the tag and allow Gomez to score. That made the score 3-0 after half an inning.Hialeah added two more runs in the third inning thanks in part to a larcenous philosophy on the base path. Leading off the inning, Erick Yglesias was awarded a base on balls. Having a free pass to first he then stole second. From there Dayron Gomez drove him in with a line drive shot to center and took second on the throw. Jonathan Regalado followed with a single to center of his own on which Gomez was not able to advance. With not the fastest of the T-Breds on base, Gomez and Regalado pulled off a double steal, Gomez scoring on the play due to an errant throw. Dayron finished the day going 2-3.Then what seemed to be turning into a hitting groove for the T-Breds stopped. Hialeah had collected five hits in the first three innings of play but only managed one more the rest of the game. Still, it was enough. Starting pitcher Dariel Castro finished what he started with a complete game, seven strike out performance. Dariel raised his record to 2-0. Hialeah improves to 12-5.
Mar. 29, 2008 - Nova Spring Break Classic - Archbishop McCarthy vs Hialeah
The breaks just weren’t going Hialeah’s way. It didn’t look good from the start. Frankly, after a four run fourth inning by opponent Archbishop McCarthy to make the score at that time 6-1, the situation seemed downright hopeless. And yet... there was no quit in the T-Breds. Down to their last out, Hialeah stormed back and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and last inning in regulation play of what turned out to be a valiant 8-7 extra inning loss.Playing as host to the Mavericks in the first game for both teams of the Nova Spring Break Classic Tournament played at Pat McQuaid Field in Davie, the T-Breds got off to a bad start. Losing 2-0 after only two thirds of an inning, Hialeah brought junior pitcher Juan Carlos Sensat in relief. J.C. turned in his best performance of the year to date. He went six and a third of an inning giving up only one earned run. Juan struck out seven in the process keeping the T-Breds in the game Hialeah scored their first run in the third inning. Alejandro Diaz, the first batter of the frame, hit a rocket line drive off the Mavericks pitcher’s foot for a single. He would be sacrificed to second with a bunt from the bat of Randy Santiesteban and advance to third via an error on the same play. From there, Randy Verdecia drove him in with a sacrifice fly to left. The T-Breds chipped away at the lead in the fifth inning with two more runs. Diaz, again leading off the inning, doubled to right center. Santiesteban was awarded a base on balls to put two runners on. Erick Yglesias reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Diaz and Santiesteban scored right behind him on an errant throw. Alejandro finished the night 2-3 with a double, two runs scored and a base on balls.Down 6-3 with one out in the seventh inning, pinch hitter Ralph Riuz was hit by pitch. Joel Berlanga then singled up the middle and Yglesias reached on an error while sacrificing to load the bases. With two outs, designated hitter Dayron Gomez hit an opposite field double to left clearing the bases by driving in all three runners and tying the score. The T-Breds had come all the way back. In extra innings, Archbishop McCarthy plated two runs in the top of the eighth. The bottom of the inning almost saw another Hialeah comeback. With runners on first and second, Joel Berlanga hit a deep drive to center field that bounced over the fence for a ground rule double driving in a run. If this can be said, Berlanga was unlucky to have hit the ball as well as he did to the deepest part of the park. A few more inches and the ball would have cleared the fence. A few inches less and the ball would have stayed in the park allowing the tying run to score. As it was the T-Breds stranded the tying and winning runs on the bases. Senior Duniesky Dominguez (0-1) took the loss in relief . Hialeah’s record falls to 11-5.
Mar. 27, 2008 - Hialeah at Hialeah-Miami Lakes
″Sing, O goddess, the anger of Achilles son of Peleus, that brought countless ills upon the Achaeans.″
So did Homer begin the Iliad, his classic epic poem of the Greek’s ten year struggle and ultimate victory against the Trojans. It didn’t take the T-Breds that long to dispatch the nine from Troy. One hour and 42 minutes, five innings worth of playing time, was enough for Hialeah to defeat the Hialeah-Miami Lakes Trojans 12-1 in the annual cross town district rivalry away game. The T-Breds traveled to Gary Krey Field on the HML campus with the knowledge that a win would virtually assure them the first seed in the district tournament that will be played next month. Hialeah quickly assailed the Trojan defense from the start of the game. Lead off batter Erick Yglesias was awarded a base on balls. He was sacrificed to second in classic heroic fashion by a well executed bunt from the bat of freshman shortstop Randy Saniesteban. From there a line drive single to center by senior Randy Verdecia would score Yglesias. Three batters, one official at bat, one hit, one run. Teamwork worthy of a Greek phalanx.formation. Hialeah added two runs in the second inning due in part to some Trojan generosity. Kevin Canizares was awarded a base on balls and reached second on a failed pickoff attempt error. From there Alejandro Diaz singled up the middle to score Kevin. Diaz would later score thanks to an errant throw. One more run was scored in the third inning to make the score 4-0 after three. Freshman catcher Luis Dequesada walked and was courtesy run for by fellow freshman Avilo Burrola. Avilo stole second and was driven in by yet another freshman, left fielder Justin Garcia, who singled to center. Justin finished the Trojan campaign going 2-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Hialeah-Miami Lakes would acquire an unearned run in the fourth inning bringing the score to an interesting 4-1.At that point Hialeah used their version of the Trojan Horse. (An appropriate metaphor for the T-Breds.) Sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth, Hialeah put the game away. Winning pitcher, senior Robert Buitrago was given more help than Odysseus ever had in bringing down the topless towers of Troy. With the complete five inning game, Robert raised his record to 3-1. Hialeah improves to 11-4 overall and 10-1 in district play.
Mar. 25, 2008 - Hialeah at Miami Springs
It was everything that could be expected of the away game of an intense district rivalry. Hialeah traveled across the river to visit the Golden Hawks of Miami Springs at Shelly Dunkel Field located on the host campus. Facing a loud unfriendly chorus of rather uncomplimentary jeers, with the crowd in the stands behind home plate holding a banner that read: “RIDE THAT PONY,“ the T-Breds let their bats do the talking for them. Hialeah used the aluminum to connect for 12 hits in a 6-3 T-Bred victory. With the win Hialeah improved its overall record to 10-4 and 9-1 in district play.
Hialeah wasted no time on offense as junior center fielder Erick Yglesias doubled in the first inning then reached third on a fielder’s choice. Junior starting pitcher Dayron Gomez, hitting for himself, then helped his own cause by driving Yglesias in with a sacrifice fly. The T-Breds made it a 2-0 game in the second inning when senior Jonathan Regalado was driven in by a Luis Diaz single to left field. The lead was extended to 3-0 in the third inning when Yglesias, on base after being hit by pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on a fielder’s choice and came home on freshman catcher Luis Dequsada’s line shot hit which just went off a diving third baseman’s glove and safely into left field. Erick finished the day going 2-3 with two runs scored.
Miami Springs would score in the bottom of the third inning and again in the fourth to make it a 3-2 game to the delight of the Golden Hawk faithful. But the crowd would be quited by a T-Bred three run sixth inning. Regalado led off the inning with a double. He was followed with hits, all singles by Diaz, Carlos Ortega, Yglesias, Randy Verdecia and Gomez.
Dayron pitched five strong innings for the victory allowing four hits while striking out seven. He raises his record to 5-2 in the 2008 campaign. He helped himself by going 2-3 at the plate. Senior Robert Buitrago then took to the hill pitching the final two innings giving up one hit and striking out three. Robert’s labor earned him his first save of the year.
It was rather quiet as the T-Breds left the field.
Mar. 20, 2008 - Coral park vs Hialeah
Put two of Miami-Dade county’s better teams, the Coral Park Rams and the Hialeah T-Breds, together at Alex Fernandez Field. Add two scoops, a double digit of hits for both teams. Mix in more than a handful of errors to make it a base runner’s delight. Start the oven and let bake for two hours and twenty eight minutes of game time. This recipe led to an offensive explosion in a non district game for both teams. Hialeah scored a baker’s dozen worth of runs in defeating the Rams 13-7. Both teams collected 11 hits, nine of which, three for Coral Park and six for Hialeah were of the extra base variety. After falling behind quickly 2-0 in the first inning, the T-Breds equaled and went ahead with a four run bottom of the frame and then never lost the lead. Scoring in bunches, Hialeah plated runs in every inning but the fifth. The second inning would see some blue plate specials worth of fireworks as senior shortstop Joel Berlanga led off the inning with a triple to right field then score on an errant throw all on the same play. Joel would finish 2-3 on the night scoring two run and driving another in. Later in the inning, designated hitter Dayron Gomez hit his first career home run with a line drive shot over the right field fence. Adding to the extra bag menu for the T-Breds were Erick Yglesias, Randy Verdecia, Alejandro Diaz and Jonathan Regalado all with doubles. The chef wasn’t quite finished cooking yet though. Some freshman ingredients were used in the T-Bred kitchen. Randy Santiesteban’s starting debut made for a successful entree. Randy, starting in his first varsity game at third base and later moving to second, turned in a solid defensive performance with two put outs and two assists. Other notable freshman toppings included Alvino Burrola courtesy running for the catcher. Alvino stole a base and scored two runs. Pinch runner Justin Garcia added more ninth grade flavor by stealing a base and scoring in his opportunity. Senior Thomas Guerrero who had the night off, pinch hit and promptly served up an RBI line drive single to add spice.Starting pitcher Juan Carlos Sensat (2-0) went four and a third inning surrendering seven hits while striking out three for the win. Edgar Varas then took over the pitching duties working the other two and two thirds innings of the game giving up four hits and striking out five to hold the victory. Hialeah improves its record to 9-4.
Mar. 14, 2008 - Hialeah at Central
Alex Fernandez Field, the T-Bred’s home, where Hialeah would actually be the visiting team. Game postponed because of scheduling conflict. The Greater Miami Athletic Conference, here fore to be known by all interested parties as: THE POWERS THAT BE, dictates game must be played no matter where. T-Bred players learn Friday morning of the game after being told Thursday night it had been postponed. The Hialeah nine have to scramble home and get their uniforms. To muddle the situation even further, the bus to the game leaves earlier than scheduled. With wacky twists and turns that would have impressed the Keystone Cops, Hialeah finally played the hosting Central Rockets at Partners Park located directly across from the Caleb Center. The T-Breds won 20-5 in the five inning contest improving their overall record to 8-3 and 8-0 in district play. Starting pitcher Dariel Castro (1-0) recorded his first win of the 2008 campaign. Other notables included: Dayron Gomez in a rare offensive opportunity as designated hitter. Dayon went 3-3 on the day with a triple, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Erick Yglesias finished 2-2 with two doubles a run scored, three RBIs and a stolen base. Joel Berlanga contributed a 2-3 day with a double, three runs scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Luis Diaz also finished going 2-3 with a triple, two runs scored, 4 RBIs and a stolen base. In all Hialeah collected 19 hits in the batting frenzy.
Mar. 13, 2008 - Miami Springs vs Hialeah
Getting out ahead early and then holding on, the T-Breds won their seventh district game in a row defeating the Miami Springs Golden Hawks 5-2. The meeting of the district rivals at Alex Fernandez Field was the first since last year’s district championship at Flamingo Park, Miami Beach where the Golden Hawks won 1-0.
After a scoreless top of the first inning where despite surrendering back to back singles with one out, Hialeah senior pitcher Robert Buitrago was able to maroon both runners. In the home half of the frame, with two out in the inning, back to back singles by Randy Verdecia and Jonathan Regalado along with a base on balls loaded the bases. Freshman catcher Luis Dequesada lined a 1-1 offering into left field for a two RBI single. The T-Breds took a quick 2-0 lead. Two more runs would be scored in the second courtesy of Golden Hawk generosity. Leading off the inning, Hialeah left fielder Luis Diaz was hit by pitch. He would be sacrificed to second by second baseman Carlos Ortega. With the top of the order coming to bat, shortstop Joel Berlanga reached on a fielding error by his Golden Hawk counterpart. Then a well placed sacrifice bunt by center fielder Erick Yglesias caused a throwing error by the Miami Springs pitcher plating both T-Bred runners as unearned runs. Yglesias would end up at third on the play. Although he was stranded there, the damage had been done. Hialeah was leading 4-0 after two innings. The T-Breds would never look back.
Miami Springs would score one run in the third and another in the fifth to make it an uncomfortably close 4-2. Hialeah would get one run back in the bottom of the fifth when Jonathan Regalado doubled to center driving home Erick Yglesias who had been hit by a pitch. Regalado finished going 2-3 with the double and RBI. The T-Breds made economically efficient use of what hitting they could muster, to use kind terms. Hialeah managed only five hits, compared to 10 for the Hawks. Yet the five hits were enough to produce the statistic that really counts, five runs.
Buitrago raised his record to 2-1 with the complete game performance striking out 4 in the process. The T-Breds improved to 7-3 on the season and 7-0 in district play.
Mar. 10, 2008 - Miami Beach vs Hialeah
On a cool night with the T-Bred bats just as cool, junior Hialeah pitcher Dayron Gomez took matters into his own hands. Gomez turned in a brilliant complete game shutout no hit 13 strike out performance leading the T-Breds to a 1-0 victory over the district rival Miami Beach Hi-Tides in a game played at the friendly confines of Alex Fernandez Field. While being held to only four hits themselves, the T-Breds were able to string two of them together in the third inning to give Hialeah a 1-0 lead at the time. With one out in the inning junior center fielder Erick Yglesias bunted his way on safely to start the rally. He advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt as the Hi-Tide pitcher committed a throwing error. Then with two outs senior Randy Verdecia tripled to center field driving Yglesias in. That was all the offensive help Gomez would need. With the win Dayron improved his record to 4-1 sporting a 0.00 ERA so far this season. Miami Beach would mount their most serious threat in the sixth inning. A lead off base on balls and a sacrifice bunt coupled with a throwing error found runners on first and third with no outs with the heart of the Hi-Tide order coming to bat. Gomez reared back and struck out Beach’s second, third and clean up hitters, all swinging, to extinguish all hope in the visitor’s half of the frame. The victory raises Hialeah’s overall record to 6-3 and 6-0 in district play.
Feb. 11, 2008 - Palmetto vs Hialeah - Easton Battle at the Ridge
Combined stellar outings by pitchers Robert Buitrago and Carlos Forte were not enough. Although holding the Palmetto Panthers hitless through six and two third innings, one out short of a complete regulation game, Hialeah lost 1-0 in nine innings. The extra inning contest, played at Robbie Smith Field on the campus of Southridge Senior High School, was the regular season opener for both teams.Senior starting pitcher Buitrago went four hitless innings Striking out five in the process. He was relieved by Forte, a junior, who pitched five innings worth of work striking out three. Carlos was charged with the hard luck loss. His record falls to 0-1 to start the season. T-Bred bats were for the most part silent throughout the game. Hialeah could only muster three hits, all singles. Senior right fielder Randy Verdecia went 2-4 and junior catcher Ralph Ruiz accounted for the only other Hialeah hit. Not that the T-Breds didnt have their chances. Hialeah managed runners on second and third with one out in the first, runners on first and third with two outs in the eighth and runners on second and third with two outs in the ninth. Timely hitting did not materialize as the T-Breds in their black uniforms stranded seven.
Feb. 7, 2008 - American vs Hialeah
This took a while. In a game not for the inpatient, Hialeah defeated the American Patriots 3-2 in what turned out to be an exciting last game of the Hialeah Classic Preseason Tournament played at Alex Fernandez Field. Losing 1-0 and being no hit through four innings, the T-Breds sprung for two hits and three runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and then held on. Sophomore third baseman Kevin Canizares started the fifth inning off hitting the first pitch he saw in the at bat for a single down the left field line. After an error put runners on second and third, junior left fielder Luis Diaz hit a line shot just over third base and inside the left field foul line for a double scoring Canizares and courtesy runner sophomore Pastor Sanchez. Starting pitcher, junior Dayron Gomez looked sharp going four innings, allowing two hits, both in the first inning and striking out six. He was relieved by junior Carlos Forte who pitched two hitless innings striking out three including the last two batters in a bases loaded sixth inning. American managed to put the would be tying and go ahead runs in scoring position in the seventh inning with two outs. That was when junior Edgar Varas took to the hill and shut the door. Edgar struck out the Patriot clean up hitter looking to end the game. All four teams involved in the tournament, American, Goleman, Killian and Hialeah finished the preseason 1-1.
Feb. 5, 2008 - Goleman vs Hialeah
It was a very rough start to the season. The Hialeah T-Bred baseball team lost their season opener at Alex Fernandez Field to the rival Gators of Barbara Goleman 15-1.The Gators hit the ground running as they sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on seven hits in the opening frame of the game. Goleman followed that up with a five run second inning to put the game out of reach early. Hialeah starting pitcher, senior Robert Buitrago, was chased from the mound after only 2/3 of an inning. Robert surrendered 10 runs, three earned, off six hits which included three doubles. Junior reliever Juan Carlos Sensat fared no better as he gave up five earned runs, including a three run homer on six hits in one and a third inning of work. Senior T-Bred pitcher Nelson Falcon did hold the opposition in check pitching two hitless innings and striking out four. But the damage had already been done. The was some good news for the T-Breds as several players showed offensive spark. Senior Randy Verdecia scored Hialeah’s lone run on a solo home run in the first inning. Varsity newcomers Ralph Ruiz and Luis Diaz both went 2-2 with two singles apiece. Hialeah will again take the field this Thursday in search of their first win of the season against the American Patriots at Alex Fernandez Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
